2004年,教育部制定了《大學(xué)英語(yǔ)課程教學(xué)要求》,提出“大學(xué)英語(yǔ)的教學(xué)目標(biāo)是培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的英語(yǔ)綜合應(yīng)用能力,特別是聽(tīng)說(shuō)能力,使他們?cè)诮窈蠊ぷ骱蜕鐣?huì)交往中能用英語(yǔ)有效地進(jìn)行口頭和書(shū)面的信息交流”。
根據(jù)上述的教學(xué)要求,大學(xué)英語(yǔ)這門(mén)課程教學(xué)的中心任務(wù),就是培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的“英語(yǔ)綜合應(yīng)用能力!比欢@種綜合應(yīng)用能力的核心又是什么呢?語(yǔ)言教育學(xué)家海默斯(Hymes)從語(yǔ)言認(rèn)知和語(yǔ)言教學(xué)角度出發(fā),對(duì)喬姆斯基(Chomsky)提出的語(yǔ)言能力(lan——guage competence)的概念做了釋義和擴(kuò)展,認(rèn)為語(yǔ)言交際能力(the communicative com——petence)具有四個(gè)組成部分,即可能性(possibility)——生成合乎語(yǔ)法的句子的能力;可行性(feasibility)——生成能夠?yàn)槿四X所理解的句子的能力;適宜性(appropriate——ness)——在具體的社會(huì)變化場(chǎng)合準(zhǔn)確使用語(yǔ)言形式的能力;行事性(performance)——使用語(yǔ)言表達(dá)思想的行為或事物。后來(lái),西方的一些語(yǔ)言教育學(xué)者和專家們就依據(jù)海默斯的觀點(diǎn),擬定出了相應(yīng)的語(yǔ)言交際功能教學(xué)大綱、意念功能大綱和情景交際大綱等。迄今為止,在我國(guó)大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教育界,按照蔡基剛教授的說(shuō)法,已經(jīng)編出和推出了四代大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材,而當(dāng)前呼之欲出的該是第五代大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材了。
對(duì)于第五代大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材該如何編寫(xiě),眾多的名師大家意見(jiàn)不一。在我們這個(gè)人口眾多的國(guó)家,大學(xué)入學(xué)新生的英語(yǔ)基礎(chǔ)參差不齊。而目前市場(chǎng)上出現(xiàn)的大學(xué)英語(yǔ)教材,已有多種。雖然眾多學(xué)者歷盡艱辛,但對(duì)目前使用的教材,大家普遍的反映是練習(xí)編得越來(lái)越多,課本編得越來(lái)越厚,配套輔助教材多得無(wú)力應(yīng)付,教師和學(xué)生都感到不堪重負(fù)。

As a child——and as an adult as well——Bill was untidy. It has been said that in orderto emmteraet this, Mary drew up weekly clothing plans for him. On Mondays he mightgo to school in blue, on Tuesdays in green, on Wednesdays in brown, on Thursdays inblack, and so on. Weekend meal schedules might also be planned in detail. Everythingis arranged in time, at work or during his leisure time.2 Dinner table discussions in the Gatess family home were always lively and educa-tional. "It was a rich environment in which to learn," Bill remembered.3 Bills contemporaries, even at the age, recognized that he was exceptional. Everyyear, he and his friends would go to summer camp. Bill especially liked swimming andother sports. One of his summer camp friends recalled, "He was never a nerd or a goofor the kind of kid you didnt want in your team. We all knew Bill was smarter than us.Even back then, when he was nine or ten years old, he talked like an adult and couldexpress himself in ways that none of us understood".4 Bill was also well ahead of his classmates in mathematics and science. He needed togo to a school that challenged him to Lakeside——an all-boys school for exceptionalstudents. It was Seattles most exclusive school and was noted for its rigorous academicdemands, a place where "even the dumb kids were smart. "5 Lakeside allowed students to pursue their own interests, to whatever extent theywished. The school prided itself on making conditions and facilities available that wouldenable all of its students to reach their full potential. It was the ideal environment forsomeone like Bill Gates.
