《新編綜合英語》共四冊，每冊12個單元，四冊共48個單元，在詞匯、語法、語篇等難度系數上逐步提高。每單元圍繞一個中心主題，分為課文A（TextA）和課文B（TextB）兩個部分，兩篇課文主題上相互關聯。課文A為精講篇章，由教師講解，要求學生深入、透徹地理解課文并完成課前練習和課后練習，課前練習如詞匯、背景知識激活等，課后練習包括讀、說、寫、譯的基本能力訓練，包括問答、釋義、詞匯選擇、選擇填空、完型填空、英譯中、中譯英與寫作等多種練習形式；TextB是與TextA話題相關的內容拓展或者深化部分，是學生寫作、討論及辯論的基本材料，練習形式為問答題。
